This week we bring you a shocking warning about a new danger linked with statins. Did you know that they stimulate the production of something called P9 which can not only damage the liver but also actually makes statins less effective? Nor did we.

Dr Malcolm Kendrick explains why this side effect, unlike the others, is one that the drug companies are keen to warn everyone about. The reason is that a new generation of post-statin drugs is due within the next year or so and this particular side effect is central to their marketing strategy.

He’s been looking at what’s coming and you should be very worried. For the way misleading way details of statin’s side effects and benefits are normally handled, see the post from Dr John Briffa.

The two articles raise serious questions about the way those charged with protecting our public health are doing their job; whether their advice is based on good evidence and to what extent it is influenced by commercial interests.
